  • A streamlined publishing process keeps the eBook price below $10.

How to Create Stunning PhotographyTony Northrup’s DSLR Book: How to Create Stunning Digital Photography uses the eBook format to demonstrate the future of self-paced learning by combining the best elements of instructional books, classroom teaching, video instruction, and CBT with a software development lifecycle.

The key features are:

  • VIDEO. Short video segments (totally over 3 hours) are integrated throughout the book to reinforce key lessons, visually demonstrate techniques, and increase reader attention span. To keep file size manageable, videos are accessed online using clickable links, typeable URLs, and scannable QR codes. Videos play directly in all popular color eBook readers. Readers with eInk devices can access videos by typing a short URL or scanning a QR code with a smartphone or tablet.
  • LEARNING-FRIENDLY STRUCTURE. The author leverages his experience publishing more than 30 educational books and recording video training courses to create a structure that provides an optimal learning experience. Lessons mix conceptual and procedural teaching in a written format, example photos show both good and bad results, videos demonstrate techniques without distracting music or effects, and hands-on practices that provide real-world experience.
  • CLASSROOM SUPPORT. To provide teacher and peer guidance previously only available in a classroom, the author provides an online classroom environment hosted by Facebook. By using the Facebook platform, readers do not need to create an account or learn a new user interface. Additionally, readers can access the group using web pages or apps optimized for their device. Readers can submit questions and photos for feedback and bi-weekly photo challenges keep readers engaged. As a reward for achievement, outstanding reader photos are shared with an audience of 13,000 photography fans on the author’s Facebook page.
  • UPDATES. Lifetime updates (released monthly on average) keep the book up-to-date even when new technology emerges, making this the first technology book that will never become outdated. To allow existing readers to quickly absorb the new information, the author separately publishes the highlights of each update to the online classroom.
  • NEW CONTENT. The author uses his direct interaction with readers to determine which areas of the book need to be expanded or improved. For example, after several readers had problems with dust in their cameras, the author added a section and video showing how to clean a camera. When several readers asked for feedback on pictures that were underexposed, the author expanded the existing content covering exposure. In this way, the author can use actual reader results to improve the learning experience for future readers.
  • REAL-WORLD EXAMPLES. The author and his partner personally took every photo in the book, ensuring the author has the knowledge to explain the techniques. Most photography books use stock photography not taken by the author. The author traveled to 15 different countries over the course of four years to take the examples for the book, an investment far surpassing that of any other photography book. These improvements are possible because the author designed an entirely new “ebook-first” publishing process that combines traditional publishing workflow with the feedback and update processes of the software development life-cycle. To allow for  frequent and rapid updates, the author allocates time every day to working with readers and updating the book and the publisher employs a full-time editor and designer dedicated to the project.
